This work is meant to create a theoretical framework for a 3- to 5-year future for interaction and engagement on E-readers. Ensuring the quiet nature of books, we stretched to integrate social networks, Alexa, bottom navigation, and reading statistics to help customers find their next great read. Focusing on E-reader customer needs, we wanted to ensure we optimize for the devices’ touch targets, fresh rate, and focused nature.
I Fundamentally changed the device navigation & engagement, by effectively providing the Kindle E-reader team with a strategic blueprint.
Kindle E-reader has not had a major change since its launch in 2007. What are the opportunities for better customer engagement?
E-reader technology hasn’t changed much in 10+ years. Assuming a switch to Android, what are additional controls or navigation we could leverage?
Create a vision that can be used to drive road map.
Coordinate designs with operation planning documentation to influence road map.
To foster innovation, I facilitated a takeover of a meeting room, enabling all members of the Kindle team to participate and contribute their ideas.

1 Month of planning
5 weeks workshop
2 months research
I created a workshop that brought in experts, reviewed research, & developed a vision.
To get approval, I created an outline of who would attend, the presenters, the review process, goals, and expected outcomes.
Reviewing customer feedback, It was clear that there were multiple opportunities
Customers want to personalize
Difficulty with new device registration
Gestures don’t align with expectations
Navigation and tap areas are not intuitive
Leaving the device for discovery
Considering feedback, the device's navigation interactions needed to be addressed.
Wanting to make sure development was easy, I looked at a container system that could be applied across the device.
Home was improved by introducing scroll navigation, a container system, & unifying chrome experience.
1. An emphasis on Search allows customers to find books, notes, or highlights.
2. Home is updated with a card model to help accommodate vertical navigation.
3. Home is a paginated scroll, allowing customers more discovery options while still considering the constraints of the E-reader technology.
4. New base navigation is easier for the customers’ “lean back” reading experience.
5. Natural language for sort and filter helps customers understand different ways of viewing their library.
6. Library is displayed with badging off the book cover on to a card, making it easier to find a book.
7. Introduction of a social library enables customers to see what their friends have read.
To get an immersive and focused reading experience, I separated the device navigation from the reading navigation.
The reading experience was improved by bringing Alexa, pen interactions, and author notes to the page.
In the past five years, 12 concepts have evolved into notable features, including Kindle Scribe, which revolutionized the Kindle experience and transformed E-reading.
